Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but favored poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha hi-low starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where some players get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same notion in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems complicated at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an exciting array of betting options and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high, along with several trying for the low.
