Howard Lederer grew up in a family of five where he loved betting on various card games at a young age. He found himself getting really aggressive in these card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a little bit and headed to New York City to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were difficult as he played countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by being an runner for the poker players. He theorized he could improve his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an effort to acquire more rest and focus more on poker.
The actual advancement in his abilities began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would frequently challenge each other. Howard was able to access a few of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would hone his cunning thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of NL Texas Holdem.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to head out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker tournaments. She is one of the best female players the poker world has ever seen. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in money games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
