Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting follows in which players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of players can get confused. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize precisely three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical concept in just about every poker game.

A low hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems complicated at first, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of the game easily enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an exciting range of wagering options and owing to the fact that you have many players battling for the high, and many trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
