Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. A further round of betting happens. After all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some players can get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in just about all poker games.
A low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
Although it seems difficult at first, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the base subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi low offers an overwhelming assortment of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous players battling for the high hand, as well as many shooting for the low.
