Howard Lederer was born into in a family of five where he loved betting on different card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting really aggressive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little bit and moved to New York City to play some big-time chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play countless hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he might better his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on the game.

The actual advancement in his abilities happened when he began gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would frequently challenge one another. He had access into a number of the greatest minds in chess. With their assistance, he would sharpen his strategic thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic concepts in the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.

Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie Duke to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the greatest female players the poker world today. Howard Lederer relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and competed in cash games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, he made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
