Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha/8 starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of entrants get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same notion in almost every poker game.

The low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem difficult at the outset, after a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an amazing range of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many players battling for the high, as well as many trying for the low. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi-low.
