Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has expanded in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some players get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical concept in almost all poker games.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.
Although it seems complicated at the outset, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 offers an amazing array of wagering possibilities and because you have numerous individuals trying for the high, as well as several trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha hi/low.
