Howard Lederer lived in a family of five in which he enjoyed playing various card games when he was young. He discovered himself getting very competitive in these particular card games while competing against his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to put higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some formidable chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st two years were difficult as he would play many hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by being an runner for the poker players. He believed he might better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and concentrate even more on poker.
The actual advancement in his game began when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently challenge each other. Howard was able to access a number of the best players in chess. With their assistance, he would tweak his logical thinking abilities. Howard applied these strategy concepts to the game of No-Limit Texas Holdem.
He also helped his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct choice. He told Annie to move out to Las Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the greatest female players the poker world has ever seen. He relocated to Vegas in 1993 and participated in cash games for the next 10 years. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
