Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha Hi-Lo starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have either called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players can get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems complex at first, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of play with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an exciting assortment of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many players shooting for the high, as well as several trying for the low hand. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha hi lo.
